Many people throw away their old rugs, they figure that they have no use for their discolored unattractive look, so why bother? However, these days over-dyeing is a great new trend that not only rejuvenates your old rugs but also instills a habit of recycling. Over dyeing is the art of dying old rugs with a new original color to renovate them and add a fresh new look to them.  But often people are still skeptical about overdyeing.

  • Will it last?
  • Does it really work?
  • Will it stain my floor?

Such unanswered questions lead to people just throwing away their old rugs! Rugs that could have been put to good use through overdrying. Another issue people have with over-dyeing is how expensive it is! Many places charge over $1000 to overdyed a simple jute rug or carpet! More often than not people would rather prefer to add a little more amount to this cost invest in a new rug or carpet! Furthermore, there are a number of other issues that arise with overdyeing, especially with the colors that might be hard to dye. People find it quite a hassle and thus resort to the easiest option of buying a new one altogether! However, half of these ‘problems’ are due to a lack of information on getting the best results through over-dyeing. And it is due to all these problems that we have compiled a guide which will answer all your queries! You will find all your answers regarding dyeing your rug pad below along with cheaper alternatives as well.

Overdyed Blue Rugs

While it’s no secret that the color light blue is harder to dye on any fabric, this doesn’t mean that you can’t overdye it. Overdyed rugs have been in trend for quite some time now and they aren’t going anywhere soon either! Overdyed blue rugs are very fashionable and with a little more precision, any rug pad can be overdyed blue. Overdyed rugs transform your space and create a sense of grandeur and add an artistic touch to your home.

Can Be Overdyed

Almost any type or color of rug can be overdyed. While some colors are harder to overdye than others, they still, in theory, can be overdyed. Any old rug or even a slightly used wool rug that you don’t fancy can be overdyed. Whether it’s a hand-me-down that’s been sitting in your attic for a month or a 2-month-old rug which you stained by accident. Something to note about overdyed rugs is that certain practices can make them fade away. Cleaning your rug aggressively regularly will eventually cause the color to fade away! Also, cleaning certain spots aggressively will leave your rug with a patch of discolored area. Extreme exposure to sunlight can also cause fading of the dye. So be super careful with your rugs’ maintenance especially the ones that cost a fortune!

Can’t Be Overdyed

There are only a few types of rugs that can’t be overdyed, the main ones are synthetic types and hand-tufted. Hand-tufted rugs can be a menace to dye. Even though you can go through the dyeing process with them but after the dye, the rug starts to fall apart. The reason for this is that these rugs cannot handle the dye retention and dye saturation process. Customers must be careful when buying overdyed synthetic rugs as they can easily be scammed. Synthetic fibers such as nylon cannot be overdyed, any overdyed synthetic rugs on the market are only made to look overdyed. Synthetic materials cannot retain any dye after the dye has turned solid. The colors are added before the fibers are glued on to the rug body. It is important that you do not try to overdye your synthetic rugs as they will no  be able to retain the colors! This will then be a waste of your time, money and effort Moroccan.

Result

If you get your rugs done professionally, then your rug will come back looking better than ever! Over dyeing your rug gives it a deep, rich and saturated look that will surely make it the center of attention in your dining room. It’s certainly the pop of color every room needs. Even if you don’t end up liking your overdyed rug then that’s no issue as the dye can also be removed easily. However, the method of removing dyes can be somewhat costly! So we recommend you to give it a lot of thought before going through with it. Also, if possible get your rug overdyed by a reliable source.

Clean Overdyed Rug

Cleaning overdyed rugs are quite a tricky task and if done wrong, may ruin your whole rug. The first step is always to do a dye test. You can do this by adding a high pH solution to your rug or try the simpler method of testing the rugby pouring hot water on the front and back. If the dye bleeds with either of those then you need to use a dye stabilizer on your rug. Make sure you go through this step first as most people do not bother with this! Because of this negligence, the dye ends up bleeding and permanently ruins the rug! For spot cleaning, you will need a bucket of water, vinegar, and a bar of dish soap or liquid. We recommend you to use a mild dish soap that does not have a strong scent. Moving on, after you have your mixture ready, use a clean white cloth and soak it in the mixture. Start to apply it gently on your rug. When applying the mixture, do not scrub as this can damage the fibers of your rug beyond repair. Furthermore, it can cause the dyes to bleed and fade! After you’re done cleaning, you now need to dry your rug. Do not put your overdyed rug under direct sunlight as this will cause the colors to fade. Instead, you can use a blower or a heater to dry your rug. Make sure your overdyed rug has been thoroughly dried. This is because any moisture left will only attract more dirt and soil which will decrease the lifespan of your precious rug.  Now that you’ve cleaned your rug, place it wherever you want to!
